Dumpster Rental Quote Checklist: 12 Questions That Prevent Surprise Charges

Most dumpster rental complaints start with the same sentence: “They didn’t tell me about that fee until the invoice came.” These 12 questions prevent that conversation.

Why a checklist matters more than a low price

The most expensive dumpster rental is the one that surprises you on the back end. A $50 difference in the upfront quote means almost nothing if the cheaper company tacks on $200 in surcharges, $150 in overage fees, and a $75 dry-run charge because their truck couldn’t access your driveway.

The checklist below takes 5 minutes to walk through with a sales rep on the phone. It catches the 12 line items that produce nearly every customer complaint in this industry. Use it on every quote — and watch the cheapest base rate often turn into the most expensive total.

The 12 questions

1. What size container am I getting, in cubic yards?

Not “medium” or “large” — the actual cubic yardage. Sizes that sound the same can have different dimensions and capacities depending on the manufacturer.

2. What weight allowance is included in the base price?

Get this in tons. A typical 20-yard includes 2 to 4 tons depending on the company. The difference between 2 tons and 4 tons can be $150 or more in overage charges on a typical project.

3. What’s the per-ton overage rate?

Reasonable overage runs $40 to $100 per ton. Anything above $150 per ton is on the high end. Get the rate in writing — verbal estimates of overage charges are not enforceable.

4. How many days is the rental period?

Standard is 7 to 14 days. Some companies advertise low rates for 5-day windows that won’t cover a typical kitchen remodel.

5. What’s the per-day extension fee?

Typical extensions run $5 to $15 per day. If you might need an extra week, ask for a flat weekly extension rate — usually negotiable.

6. Is delivery and pickup included?

Should always be included in flat-rate pricing. If they’re separate line items, that’s a red flag.

7. Does the price include all fuel, environmental, and admin surcharges?

This is where the biggest hidden fees live. A 35 percent fuel surcharge added at invoice time can add $100+ to a typical rental.

8. Is sales tax included in the quoted price?

If they say “no, that’s separate,” make them quote the all-in price including tax. Tax can add 8 to 13 percent.

9. Will I need a permit, and who pulls it?

If your dumpster is going on the street, you’ll need a permit. Confirm whether the company handles it or you’re responsible — and what it costs.

10. What’s the list of prohibited items, and what are the per-item fees?

Mattresses, tires, refrigerators, paint, and electronics are typically prohibited. Per-item fees vary widely. Get the list and the fees in writing.

11. Is driveway protection included or extra?

Plywood under the steel feet of the dumpster prevents driveway damage. Some companies provide it at no charge; others charge $25 to $75 or skip it entirely.

12. What’s the cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Find out the cutoff for free cancellation, the rescheduling fee, and whether your deposit is refundable. Don’t pay until you have these in writing.

How to use the checklist

Call your top three companies and run all 12 questions on each call. Take notes. Ask for the answers in writing — most reputable companies will email you a written quote within an hour.

When the quotes come in, lay them side by side. The differences will jump out immediately. Companies that won’t put their answers in writing are the ones to avoid.

What a great quote looks like

A high-quality quote will include: the size in cubic yards, the included weight allowance in tons, the per-ton overage rate, the rental period in days, the per-day extension fee, all-in pricing including taxes and surcharges, the prohibited items list with fees, and the cancellation policy. Ideally on company letterhead, with a quote number and an expiration date.

If you’re getting a quote scribbled on a phone call with no follow-up email, that’s not a quote — it’s a verbal estimate. Don’t book with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most important question to ask before booking?

What weight allowance is included, and what’s the per-ton overage rate. This single combination produces more billing surprises than every other fee combined.

Should I get the quote in writing?

Always. Verbal quotes don’t bind the company to anything. A written quote — even just an emailed summary — gives you something to reference if the final bill doesn’t match.

How many companies should I call?

Three is the sweet spot. Two doesn’t give you enough comparison; five-plus produces diminishing returns and decision fatigue.

What’s a red flag in a dumpster rental quote?

Refusal to quote in writing, vague answers about surcharges, or a base rate that’s significantly below market without explanation. The lowest quote is usually the lowest because something is missing.
